Devil’s Triangle, Boys a Team : Sure Can Scramble

Devil’s Triangle Parent Junior Club Tournament – the boys played as a team – mom and dad not playing, even though its billed as a Parent Junior tournament. It’s either going to be very pretty or a complete fiasco……

Holes 1 through 3: Shamble (both drive, take best drive and play own shots in).  Rob rescues Bear off the tee on the first 2 holes.  Hole 1 Bear par.  Hole 2 Rob par.  Hole 3 both par.

Holes 4 through 6: Alternate shot off best drive.  Putting for a birdie on par 5 hole 4 they disagree on the read of the putt.  Against his better judgment Rob entertains Bear’s read and puts it 4 inches off the hole.  Not pleased.

Bear : You didn’t have to listen to me !

Par 3 hole 5 – Bear bounces it off a retaining wall wildly into the woods.  Rob sends it over the green.  They are both mad with themselves and for the first time go one over in spite of Bear’s magical chip to 4 feet of the pin.

I give them my usual talk (I really can’t help myself) about keeping a light and happy heart.  It does not go down well and I receive the usual request to stop talking.

Bear’s tee shot off the next hole goes left and he remains unhappy.  I point out the lack of routine (I really can’t help myself) and he tells me I don’t help, but they par notwithstanding a putt Rob should have put closer and which, once again, they had not achieved consensus on the read.

Holes 7 though 9 finish up the tournament as a regular scramble.  As much as they didn’t like my input much (I was only there to drive) they talked amicably to eachother.    Par 3 hole 8 they again made it so much more difficult than it needs to be, neither landing the ball on the green.  What’s with Par 3s today that bring out the tempest in a teapot?  Why all the pressure on themselves?  It’s a little club tournament for goodness sake – means nothing.  They still par it with some magic short-game, these boys sure can scramble ……
