Energy: May the Force be with them

Energy.  The ability of a system to perform work.  The strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. Adequate definitions, yes.  But so one-dimensional. Energy is in fact everywhere, it is the building block of existence and weaves the very fabric of our DNA.  In an analogy we can all grasp, Obi-wan Kenobi describes the Force as ‘an energy field that surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together.’
Reading it also allows you to tap into how your player or team is likely to do.  This past weekend I spent watching basketball tournaments from the bleachers, as opposed to golf from the bag.  The first game Bear played, his coach was on the sidelines of one of his other teams and a dad was “coaching” the team.  This dad is a nice guy, but not their basketball coach who is super loud, aggressive and high-energy.  They lost that first game. Actually they were killed that first game and never looked anything more than somewhat disorganized.  Not having a real “leader” on the team they rely on their coach to set the tone and in a team sport tone is fundamental.
Later in the day they played the same team again.  Coach on the sidelines this time.  The boys went out, heads up, quick hands and scored in the first play.  Their energy was up visibly and carried them victoriously through all 4 quarters.
We have watched Bear on the golf course hit one shot out-of-bounds or in the water or some other hazardous spot and seen a visible plunge in confidence and energy level as a result.  Suddenly shoulders stoop, head falls and imaginary stones are kicked aimlessly across the fairway.  Nothing good can come from tumbling energy levels and in a sport like golf, the tone is set internally.

Unfortunately I’m not quite sure of what can be done to change the direction of an energy downward spiral.  Unless you’re an extremely charismatic coach or supporter and not too emotionally tangled with your player there is probably not much.  Ultimately the player has to be focused and strong enough mentally to pull him or herself out.  Maybe as a start he or she needs to learn to channel Chirrut Imwe.  They say that positive affirmations are a traditional door to the subconscious mind:

I’m one with the force, the force is with me.  I’m one with the game, the game is with me.  I’m one with the ball, the ball is with me.  I’m one with the course, the course is with me.
Tap into your highest energy levels. A Jedi’s strength flows from the Force.
