Saturday
I played with Rob today.
People always ask me – do you play? Probably because I look the part. My standard response is : I can but I don’t. I was brought up on tennis and field hockey. I can drive the ball well – that swing motion is flat and somewhat consistent to that of a tennis or hockey swing. Irons, however, you’ve got to swing down on them. Some formal training may be helpful – although I choose to rely on genetics and hope for the best.
Bear is playing a two day tournament this weekend and Rob very much wanted me to play with him.
Are you sure I can’t just drive you around?
No, play with me.
It’s important for a Caddy to play now and then – it is a reminder of how difficult a game golf is. I’m around golf so much I believe I have the knowledge of a seasoned PGA Professional coach, however, my kids don’t see it like this and are reluctant to take any advice from someone who shoots +60 for nine holes.
Possibly Rob wanted to see if there was any improvement in my game. Possibly he just wanted some quality mother-son time. I suspect, though, that I may just have been his entertainment for the afternoon.
It’s only a triple bogey, Mom. It’s ok. At least for you.
You might want to lay up on this hole.
The wall is not too high, Mom. If you hit a lob or sand wedge properly you should put in the middle of the green.
Wow! That was a good shot!
I’m trying not to concentrate on your shots.
I have to tell you that even experienced players have trouble out of that bunker you’re in.
Don’t panic. Just take the club you get the greatest loft with.
Are you sure that’s the right club?
I might well have been his afternoon entertainment but it turns out I was also his project.
Right before my eyes Rob became very patient and enthusiastic teacher. He saw where my club face was too closed and demonstrated how to open it to get greater loft. He gave detailed advice on hitting out of bunkers and tried to correct my awful putting yip.
We spend so much time and energy trying to make our kids better. I’m glad I put myself into the position he could return the favor.
Sunday
Rob : Maybe Daddy can play a round of golf with me this afternoon?
Me : I’m sure he would like that.
Rob : While we are playing, you might like to go to the practice range and work on your 3-woods. Try just with a 3/4 swing and relax your hip a little which will probably open the club face, but not too much …….
