Regional Tournament Day 1 : Out Of Our League?

Dad to Rob: You work on your game, Robbie and you’ll get better.  As long as you are having fun on the golf course.

Oh I am.

Dad to Me:  What about you?  You have fun?

Me: What?  Hell no !  Do caddies ever have fun?

Hot as Hades.  Way too many putts, 3 wood woes, and a Daddy Caddy that raced from hole to hole like a Marine hitting Omaha Beach then spent painstaking minutes physically positioning and verbally instructing line, angle and read on Every Single Shot.

Our playing partners were both good players and nice kids who scored well.  Their caddies were very involved and I felt I let Rob down with my inability to read a putt.  I should do something about it. Must get a putt reading lesson ……… Not that I am sure Rob would believe my reads anyway.

Rob drove the ball well, often out-driving the better players, and his short chips were very good.  I felt he really played better than his score reflected and we only shouted at each other a couple of times.  The question going forward is really simple.  Can it be fun?  Even if we are a little out of our league playing here with the top players in the country.

So why wasn’t it fun?

Maybe because Rob didn’t play so well.  It would have been more fun if he had got to the green in regulation and 1 putted …… Yes, but he doesn’t do that as a rule anyway………  And the words of modern day guru, Eckhart Tolle spring to mind: the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it.

Clearly I’ve got to change my thoughts.
