How It Was
Last weekend Bear battled a strong international field, going around even on day 2 to finish 3rd in a big regional tournament in Florida. I was nowhere near the bag, Rob and I did not go.
Today I pushed Bear’s cart for 7 holes (until Max caught up with us post Rob’s round). He looked good on the practice range and great on the practice green. Hole 1 was classic Bear – straight up the fairway. Easy 8 iron on to green. 2 putts. Par.
A big approach on to green 2 bounced like mad and rolled just off the far side of the green. That is where our putting woes began.
Yes, the condition of the greens (not evident from the practice one) was horrible but OMG the complaining was worse !
Hard ! Sandy ! Uneven ! Unpredictable !
Yes – but the same for EVERYONE !
Walking around on the greens he complained himself into such a negative frame of mind that the gloom and doom allowed for not a glimmer of genius to break through.
On our walks down the fairway following good drives I heard about how Asoka takes on the Inquisitor in the new Star Wars Rebels; We Bare Bear escapades; and how much he is looking forward to next Saturday ….. What ! Pull yourself into the ‘Now” for goodness sake and rescue this round ……..
How I Think It Should Be
I think if you are going to be a really great golfer it takes much more hard work than talent.
I also think your mind needs to be 100% focussed on the game and shot ahead.
I think a regimented practice routine needs to be followed and a relentless pre and post shot routine adhered to.
I think that your mind has to be so disciplined that there is no opportunity for doubts and fears and We Bare Bears episodes and complaints to take root and wreck your chances.
I think mind mastery and relentless practicing will beat talent every time.
I think Bear believes he can prove me wrong ……….
